INPEC Meeting 2005

November 9th-13th, 2005
Ein-Gedi, Israel
"Ode" to Inpec 2005 by Michal Harel
I would like to say a few words
About a meeting quite full of odds.
First, it took me a long time, I must admit
To figure out who made the Inpec delegate list.
After much deliberation I came to one conclusion:
It's a bunch of old friends who are looking for annual fun and seclusion.

Joel wanted a place where there'll not be many distractions,
people will not be sneaking to their labs, discos or other attractions.
We chose Ein Gedi because it is warm, beautiful and secluded.
Of course, we didn't realize how many flies will also be included.

Initially, Joel had some grand plans - that's for sure -
For example: to fly everyone to Jordan for a Petra tour.
Finally, we settled for the bare minimum amount:
a desert hike, spa, botanical gardens and a Massada mount.

After surviving the preliminary hurdle -
of visas, transportation and even getting Richard Garrett's flight schedule,
the Inpec meeting started going ahead
and even the talks weren't too bad.

From protein repeats and unfolded proteins in solution,
to wandering loops, chasing function and directed evolution.
With moonlighting and promiscuity so openly stated,
an outsider would think this meeting is X-rated.

But as always in meetings, beside science and gossip, the stuff which is new
is getting to know interesting people, and there were quite a few.
Take for example Doriano - with a true gift of a guide,
got lost on Massada's exit building - just trapped there inside.
And what can be said about Krishna, who caught the bug of dancing
and like a twirling dervish, as long as the music was on, there he was prancing.
The botanical garden tour is also something to remember,
as it seemed that a few Inpec delegates were considering becoming a kibbutz member.

So - to sum it up, I think we all learned something new and had some fun,
and - even for those thinking it was a waste of time - at least you caught some November sun.
